Here are two front page pieces of stupidity from today. One from the Daily Mail, and one from the Daily Express.
Now, I already knew that these papers churned out shite on a daily basis. But these headlines? Well...these are something else.
The Daily Mail
"DAMN THE UNPATRIOTIC BREMOANERS AND THEIR PLOT TO SUBVERT THE WILL OF THE BRITISH PEOPLE."
Okay, to start with, the referendum wasn't exactly a "landslide" victory. It was a whisker or two above half the turnout of voters. If you were eligible to vote but didn't, you know what we as a society tend to say about that. So we're talking about the ones who turned out to vote, and the Leave vote won by 52% of those voters. Which doesn't exactly represent "the will of the British people".
Secondly, you're sounding a little paranoid there, Daily Mail...I mean, "plot to subvert the will of the British people"..? Really? I reckon you need to get back on the fucking meds. And double-quick, by the looks of it.
There's no "plot". There's expression of opinion, for sure. There's plenty of that. Which we're entitled to do, remember. But "plot"..?
I think you have some issues...
But the last thing is the "unpatriotic" bit. Aside from the issues I have with patriotism as a concept, it is precisely the kind of hate-mongering language - whether they accept it or not - that is geared towards demonising people with valid opinions and concerns, who in this case, obviously fall into the minority, with a view to turning people against us.
But I guess demonising a minority is what papers like this do best. I don't really know why I'm even surprised. Look at this on-going tirade against immigration...They only appeared to develop some vague hint of a conscience when a child washed up dead on beach.
And who could forget when they likened refugees to fleeing rats, as the Nazis did the Jews..? Again, not one of their finest moments.
The Daily Express
"TIME TO SILENCE EU EXIT WHINGERS."
David Maddox, has been on Twitter today, tweeting his feelings about this.
To start with, I've had plenty of online debates with Leave voters who resort to petulance and insults when challenged, so if there are any abusive Remain voters out there, and I guess it would be foolish to deny their existence, they are not alone. Leave voters are just as abusive at times.
I also don't believe that Remain voters think they have a monopoly on the
truth. That's just over-simplified, generalizing bullshit and anyone with a shred of common sense would sniff that out straight away.
But to have to come on Twitter and EXPLAIN the intent of a headline that appears to advocate silencing those with a contrary opinion shows that the headline was either poorly thought out gibberish, or cleverly thought out propaganda that retains some scope for an innocent and justifiable "real" explanation, while below the surface of its explainable "innocence", actually serves a deeper and considerably more sinister motive, which, given the track-record of papers like these, is not completely implausible...
That being, of course, stirring up hatred.
You've only got to look back over this blog-post to see that stirring up hatred is their "thing".
If it is truly the case that these idiots think we should be silenced, then the world has truly learned nothing from the attacks on the offices of Charlie Hebdo in January 2015, and neither has the Daily Express, which ran several articles condemning the attacks - widely seen as an attack on the freedom of expression.
Those who voted Remain have a right to express their concerns. As far as I'm concerned, today's Daily Express headlines amount to a total U-turn on their supposed support for the freedom of expression, and essentially sums up the utter hypocrisy of newspapers such as these, and why they should just be ignored completely.
